사람의 숨을 멎게하는 아름다운 사진들 (내셔널 지오그래픽 제공)
디지털 카메라도, 인터넷에서 온갖 사진을 본다는 건 꿈도 못꾸던 시절, 월간 "내셔널
지오그래픽"은 숨을 멎게하는 사진을 제공하는 최고의 매체였죠. 어려운 단어가 많은
기사를 읽는 건 포기하고라도 사진을 보는 것 만으로도 구독을 중단할 수 없었죠.
무겁기는 얼마나 무거웠던지 사무실 옮길때면 애를 먹었죠.

<머리 감기는 중>
일주일에 한번
“일주일에 한번씩 드시고 싶은 음식이 무엇입니까?”라는 질문에 남자들이 답을 적고 부인들은 남편의 대답을 알아맞히는 게임이었다.
그런데 남편이 햄버거란 답을 쓴 걸 알고 부인이 놀라 소리를 질렀다.
그의 대답이 갈비구이일거라고 생각했기 때문이다.
“우린 거의 매일 저녁마다 햄버거를 먹잖아요?”
“알아. 그걸 일주일에 한번만 먹었으면 좋겠단 말야.”
큰소리
어떤 남자가 재단사에게 맞춤양복이 너무 오래 걸린다고 투덜댔다.
“6주일이라니. 이봐요! 이 세상도 6일만에 만들어졌다구.”
“알아요. 그리니까 세상이 이 꼴이죠.”
오늘 할 일
「오늘 할 일을 내일로 미루지 말라.」
그랬더니 그날 당장 경리과 직원을 3만 달러를 횡령했고, 경리과장은 사장 비서와 눈이 맞아 달아났고,
세 직원을 임금인상을 요구했다고.

두 강도가 손님들의 주머니를 뒤지기 시작하자 을이 팔꿈치로 갑을 쿡쿡 찔렀다.
“이것을 받게.” 을이 속삭였다.
“내게 총을 줄 생각일랑 말게.” 갑이 역시 작은 소리로 대꾸했다.
“난 영웅이 될 생각은 없으니까.”
“총이 아닐세- 내가 전에 꾸었던 25달러야.”
법정 모독죄
“네, 그 사람은 사기꾼이예요.”
“그럼 원고의 변호사를 아십니까?”
“네 그 사람도 사기꾼이죠.”
판사는 즉시 판사석으로 두 변호사를 불러서 귓속말로 이렇게 말했다.
“당신네들이 만약 저 할머니보고 나를 아느냐고 물으면 법정 모독 죄로 벌금을 물리겠소.”
명 소
: “결코 가보지 못할 명소들을 구경하기 위해.

법정에서
“판사님, 부상을 당한 저 사람은 틀림없이 한눈을 판 것입니다.
제가 변호를 맡은 이 사람은 20년 이상의 운전 경력이 있는 사람이거든요!”
그러자 반대편 변호사가 이를 반박하고 나섰다.
“ 이 법정에서 경험에 대한 문제를 따진다면 나도 할 말이 있습니다.
이 사람은 50년 이상의 보행 경력이 있단 말입니다.”
세무서의 답변
흘러나온 대답은 “안됩니다.!”였다.
그리고 뒤를 이은말은 : “이것은 녹음된 안내 말씀입니다. ”
명 언
“우리는 해변에서 싸울 것이다. 우리는 상륙장에서 싸울 것이다.
우리는 들에서 싸우고 시가에서도 싸울 것이다.
우리는 산속에 들어가서도 싸울 것이다. ”
여하튼 우리 식구가 여름 휴가를 갔을 때 이 말은 꼭 들어맞았다.

점원이 지배인한테 가서, “있잖아요, 미련한 곰 같은 놈이 양배추 반 통을 팔라는 거예요. 그 머저리한테 가서...”라고 하는데
지배인은 겁에 질린 듯 눈을 둥그렇게 뜨고 점원 뒤를 보았다.
점원이 돌아보니 그 무섭게 생긴 손님이 자기 바로 뒤에 서서 자기를 욕하는 소리를 다 듣고 있지 않은가!
점원은 재빨리 지배인을 돌아보며 말을 이었다.
“그런데 이 신사분이 나머지 반 통을 사시겠다는군요.”
수 프
손님이 항의하자 웨이터가 재빨리 대꾸했다.
“파리도 훌륭한 수프의 맛을 아는군요!"
절약
어떤 사나이는 식당 종업원에게 “팁 대신 제 아내가 식탁 치우는 일을 도와 드리도록 하지요” 하더라고.
장수비결
“노인장께서는 그렇게 장수하시는 비결이 어디 있다고 생각하십니까?”
“아직 밝힐 수 없네.” 노인이 대답했다.
“난 이 문제를 놓고 지금 침대 제조회사 하나와 조반용 시리얼 제조회사 둘을 상대로 광고협상을 벌이고 있거든.”
